PEOPLE'S ORGANIZATION FOR PROGRESS CALLS FOR DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST U.S. WAR IN IRAQ IN CITIES ACROSS NEW JERSEY SATURDAY, JUNE 26, 2004

The People's Organization For Progress, together with other grassroots and peace organizations, will hold demonstrations against the U.S. war in Iraq in cities and towns across New Jersey which will take place Saturday, June 26, 2004. The actions are being organized around the theme "Peace and Justice From Iraq to the USA."

"We are having these protests to link our opposition to the war to issues of local concern such as jobs, housing, health care, education, racism, police brutality and prisoner abuse. We want peace and justice at home as well as abroad," according to POP chairman Lawrence Hamm.

In Newark the demonstration will begin at 12:00 noon at the Essex County Hall of Records, 465 Martin Luther King Blvd. For further information contact Ibn Morris at (973) 624-3441. A demonstration will be held in Montclair also at 12:00 noon at the corner of Bloomfield Avenue and Church Street. For more information call POP at (973) 801-0001.

The protest in Jersey City will start at 11:00 a.m. in front of City Hall, 280 Grove Street. Contact Elizabeth Terry at (201) 920-6310 for additional information. The protest in Englewood will start at 12:00 noon at the Englewood Monument located at the intersection of Palisade Avenue and Tenafly Road. Contact Cliff Arrington at (201) 833-8493 for additional information.

In Morristown the rally will be held at 12:00 noon on the Morristown Green in the heart of the business district. For directions contact Susan Berkowitz (973) 334-3826. The protest in Plainfield will start at 1:00 p.m. on the corner of East Front Street and Park Avenue. Contact Steven Hatcher (908) 753-5273 for more information.

A demonstration will be held in Atlantic City beginning 3:00 p.m. at 700 Maryland Avenue in the "Marina District." The contact person there is Merceda D. Gooding who can be reached at (609) 272-3320.

Demonstrations are also being planned for New Brunswick, Camden, Elizabeth, New York, Philadelphia and other areas. Persons interested in organizing a protest with POP in other areas should call (973) 801-0001.

Local POP branches will be working with other groups to organize the demonstrations. The other co-sponsors include the Greater Atlantic City HUD Tenant Coalition, Montclair Campaign for Peace and Justice, NJ Peace Action, Montclair NAACP, Parishoners for Peace and Justice, Inclusive Democracy Project, Socialist Party of New Jersey, North Jersey Anti-Racist Action, and One Peoples Project.

"This will be the beginning of a series of such actions which we hope will spread to other cities and towns in the state," Hamm said.
